Everything has been going well, despite the rain. Folks are still coming out and looking the weather in the eyes, and making the rain stop just for the events. The swap saw hundreds of folks come thru it's gates. All the rides have seen great attendance and went super well. So, keep staring momma nature down and keep the rain away...

BikeFest Display at the Carnegie Library in Oakland

Be sure to check out the Bikefest Display at the Carnegie Library in Oakland. The display is located on the first floor and features a bunch of bike-related social history, repair, training, and children's books. You can also pick up posters/calendars at the display.

They are now available for $10 in person, $12 ppd.

New Event Added-Screening of Breaking Away

This won't be on the calendar, obviously, but we were able to get the Pittsburgh Center of the Arts and Filmmakers to have a FREE outdoor screening of Breaking Away!!
It will be at PCA, at Fifth and Shady on July 3, at 9ish (sundown)
If you go on the Scenic Views Ride, the ride leader is going to end at this event.
There are also some shorts that will be screened as well.

Bicycling: Festival atmosphere should pump up cyclists the next three weeks

Biking in the 'Burgh can be daunting.

In addition to the city's hilly topography, there's the fear factor of pedaling in traffic. It can be done, of course. You just have to know how.

Sharing that knowledge is one of the goals of BikeFest, a 12-day celebration of bicycling and bicycle culture in Pittsburgh that will run from Friday to July 4.

Free Ride and Bike Pittsburgh, the coordinators of the second annual festival, said the events are designed to be enjoyed by even the most inexperienced riders to show them that bicycling "can be a fun, safe, healthy, efficient and environmentally sound way to navigate the city."

They are counting on local cyclists to help make the event successful. They also ask motorists to be extra vigilant because there will be more bicyclists on city streets during the festival.

Participants also can enjoy the delights of the asphalt-paved Three Rivers Heritage Trail which parallels miles-long sections of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers.

Eric Boerer, a co-founder of Free Ride, a non-profit community bike repair and recycling shop, said there will be a series of free, independently hosted events intended for bicyclists of all ages and abilities.

They include a bike swap at the Warhol Museum, scenic rides, tours of the city, riding and repair workshops, races, mountain bike rides and outdoor movies. A detailed events calendar can be found at neighborhood bike shops and www.bike-pgh.org. That's the Web site of Bike Pittsburgh, the city's first bicycle advocacy organization.

Boerer said Free Ride and Bike Pittsburgh serve as the clearinghouses for information relating to the events. He said they also provide the framework and resources to the individual members and organizations of the bicycling community "who are the true organizers of the festivities."

Boerer, who also serves as the outreach coordinator for Bike Pittsburgh, said the organizers of each event are eager to share their knowledge and experience and should be contacted directly about their respective events.

The posters are in and they look amazing. By the end of the week, we're hoping to have them up all over town, so you can't miss them. In a number of places like coffee shops and the food coop, we will have several posters available that people can take home with them. It has the (abridged) calendar on the back. The calendar with full and complete descriptions is still the online version, so be sure to check frequently. If you don't think that you can pick one up around town, we'd be happy to send you one. So, we just sent the calendars in to the printer!! Hopefully by late next week we should have them ready for distribution around town. The front is the postcard image, except blown up and with a bit more detail, and the back is the calendar of events. the "official" calendar is still the website, as there were so many events this year that we had trouble fitting complete descriptions. so, the print is the abridged version, and the web is encyclopedia bikefest.

The party is starting to come together. We're shooting for one of the best parties of the year again. Looks like we got lots and lots of prizes to raffle off and have as prizes for games, including some Gary Fisher Bikes and Planet Bike stuff!!! Planet Bike is also planning on attending.
Also, East End Brewing Company in Homewood is ponying up for some Brew!
I'll keep everyone updated once the details are set and we have pictures of the prizes and whatnot.
Make sure to keep June 30th open on your calendars. We know there is a Gallery Crawl earlier in the evening Downtown, but there will be a bike ride from that event to our party, so everyone can do it all!! Bring some energy bars for a super fun night in Pittsburgh, cause we think you'll need them.

So, we're trying to smooth out the calendar for this year's BikeFest!!! There's a lot of creative events, and seems like it's going to be a really fun jam-packed twelve days! The variety of events this year is great as there has been more of an effort to get kid and family friendly rides this year.

Anyway, if you are planning a ride and still have the details "TBA," or haven't submitted your ride that you've been promising to do, NOW IS THE TIME TO DO IT!!!

WE WANT TO GO TO PRESS IN TWO WEEKS, SO PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SUBMIT!!!

Once we go to press, it's going to be really hard to change the details.

To put another deadline on you, we will print a photocopy version of the calendar for Bike to Work Week and Pedal Pittsburgh, so if you want your event listed for this, we need the details by May 10.

If you haven't seen it for awhile, check out the calendar; i guarantee you'll be really impressed.

Now for the plug: We're soliciting vendors for the Bike Swap at the Warhol, so if you or a friend has lots of bike parts that you want to sell/trade, etc, this is your time to do it. Check out the details on the calendar.

A HUGE bike garage sale. Find Bargains on Road and Mountain Bikes, accessories, clothing and more! Vendors and shops will be coming from all over the area, pricing stuff to move, so show up early! This is a Bike Pittsburgh BikeFest event and part of the Andy Warhol Museum’s Downtown Show and will coincide with WYEP’s World Café Festival. Rain or Shine, so be prepared for either.

Sellers: Anyone with a surplus of road, mountain, or track bike stuff can rent a seller’s space at the swap. An 8x5 space for individuals is $10.
Space is limited and is available on a first come first serve basis, so reserve early! Space does NOT include a table or shelter, but does include FREE museum admission.

The initial postcards are in, and around town. We're trying to get folks to organize events

BIKEFEST 2006 is a project of Bike Pittsburgh, the organization working to make Pittsburgh more bicycle-friendly. Our goal is to show off Pittsburgh's unique beauty, while celebrating bicycle culture and safe riding. Last year’s fest was a huge success, so we decided to do it again!

What is Bike Fest?

Bike Fest 2006, a project of Pittsburgh’s only cycling advocacy organization, Bike Pittsburgh, came to light when we were trying to figure out what kind of event could highlight what it is that we do, and who it is that we are, and be fun at the same time. So last year, we took a successful organizing model ala Bike Summer, and introduced it to Pittsburgh, a city with a burgeoning bicycle scene. We figure that we can show off Pittsburgh’s inherent uniqueness, promote safe bicycling in all of its glory, and celebrate our bicycle culture in one foul swoop. Last year's Fest was such a success, we decided to do it again!

This years Festival, June 23 thru July 4, will include several events each day, comprising of everything from themed rides, to movies, to races and lectures. The calendar of events is open to anyone who has the desire to organize an event, and relate it to the bicycle in some fashion. The only limit is the organizers creativity. Bike Pittsburgh is acting as the “hub” to promote the events, as well as providing the framework and resources for the organizers. The scheduled list of events will eventually be on our website: www.bike-pgh.org. A print version of the calendar will be available closer to the date, since events are continuously being organized.
